The original structure of the building dates back to 1765 and, since its construction, has always been a hotel with space to keep horses, serving travellers in transit between France and Milan through the Passo del Sempione.
The Strada del Sempione starts from Milan until it reaches the Simplon Pass, from which it takes its name.
The road has always been a strategic connection since Roman times, also used by Napoleon for his conquests on Italian territory; until about 1930, it was a dirt road that even “romantic travellers”, undertaking the Grand Tour of Italy, travelled on luxurious carriages drawn by horses.
The Hotel Verbano was one of the stops for rest and relaxation.
We remember the famous actress Eleonora Duse (1858–1924), the inspiring muse and great love of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, who loved to spend a few days of rest away from the theatrical scenes at the Verbano hotel, which later dedicated a space inside the restaurant to her, containing some of her personal belongings.
After an initial extensive renovation of the building in 2008, the residence has been constantly renovated over the years, transforming it today into an elegant Resort that is capable of offering hotel services.
Among the extensions that have been built, we wish to highlight the children’s pool and the pool for adults, completed by a comfortable solarium area with direct access to the lake.
This elegant Resort is located directly on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, close to the lake’s main attractions, such as the city of Arona, Stresa and the archipelago of the Borromean Islands.
Today the “Antico Verbano” Resort is not just a place to spend peaceful and relaxing moments, but also a historical memory of our past.
Our twenty-seven apartments differ from each other in terms of their layout, furnishings and capacity, thus constituting an important distinctive feature of ours: uniqueness.
We can also proudly say that we are one of the few tourist facilities on Lake Maggiore to be truly “au pied du lac” (right on the waterfront).
